WPT Southern Poker Championship Day 1

The World Poker Tour calendar kicked off today with the start of the Southen Poker Championship at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi Mississippi.  The event, which has a $10,000 buy-in, saw 214 entrants this year – a slight increase on the previous year’s participation.

Among the entrants were previous winners Bill Edler, Hoyt Corkins, and Allen Carter.  Edler busted out in the second level of play, while Corkins and Carter have both survived to make it to day two.

Other noteable players that will be around for day two include Gavin Smith, Joseph Cheon, and Johnathan and Larry Little.  Noteable eliminations included Randal Flowers, John Hennigan, Matt Affleck, Tyler Smith, and Dan O’Brien.

The chip leader at the end of Day 1 was Robert Keller, with a stack of 179,025.  Standing second in the chip count is Gavin Smith, with 144,525.

Day 2 is set to begin at 12PM CT.  The day will consist of five 90 minute levels.  Check back tomorrow for Day 2′s results and other tournament updates.
