British professional poker player Sam Trickett recently won $6.5 million at the World Series of Poker for his second place finish in the Big One for One Drop tournament. He went out to celebrate his win, and was attacked when leaving the casino. Trickett was ambushed by six men, and beaten, but not robbed. The attackers also spat on his girlfriend, who was with him at the casino.

After the attack, he said “Is this what happens if you’re successful?” He called the attackers “cowards”, and vowed not to let them ruin his holiday.

Trickett survived the ordeal with a cut to the bridge of his nose, and some bruising to his eye and forehead. He is otherwise in good shape, and remains in good spirits, planning to continue to enjoy the rest of his Vegas holiday.

Trickett thanked his fans and followers on Twitter for their support, but he did get some rather nasty responses. Some people believe that he deserved the beating, saying “You deserved it. I saw the way you disrespected Hellmuth. Karma is a bitch. LOL!” Trickett denies behaving disrespectfully, and there’s certainly no excusing violence, but the ensuing arguments were interesting for social networking fans to watch.

Hopefully, the remainder of the World Series of Poker will continue with no more harm done to any players or spectators.
