While all eyes are on sporting prowess this month, next month, there’ll be a new kind of Olympics heading to London in the form of the London Poker Festival. The event is being run by Bluff Europe, who made an announcement to that effect stating “Because they refuse to have poker in the Olympics, the UK poker community, galvanized by Bluff Europe Magazine, has decided to hold its very own “pokerlympics” throughout the month of September.”

This year, the festival will have more than GBP1 million in prize money up for grabs, with around 80 different events for people to take part in. The event will also boast live music, parties, poker lessons, and the British Poker Awards.

Last year, the London Poker Festival was a huge success, and attracted a lot of attention from people in the area, introducing a large number of players to the game. Whether or not this is the first step towards poker being recognized by the International Olympic Committee remains to be seen. It’s unlikely there’ll be poker medals up for grabs any time soon, after all, chess is still waiting for recognition too, but it’s always fun to have our own mini Olympics in the mean time!
