Online poker is something of a seasonal activity, it seems.  But it’s not festive celebrations that pull players away from their keyboards, sporting events.

The World Cup was a huge distraction to the many online poker players, and because of this a number of online poker sites have seen their recent profits greatly reduced.

Online poker players laid down their cards to track the excitement of the 2010 Football World Cup, and profits at some online poker sites fell by 56% for the duration of the cup.

Share holders in poker sites will  be disapponted by the news, with some sites cancelling their interim dividends as a precautionary measure.

The change seems to be limited to poker.  Revenues for bingo sites are on the up.  There was also a slight increase in overall casino income.
