The International Federation of Poker is gearing up to host the Nations Cup in London.  The event will start today at the EDF Energy London Eye, and has attracted the attention of several poker pros, including Gus Hansen, Barry Greenstein, Antonio Esfandiari, Liv Boeree, and Tony G.

Teams from countries including Spain, Germany, the USA, Ireland, Austrlia, Japan, the Netherlands, and Denmark have gathered to take part in the tournament.  Most people are betting on the USA, which has a line up including online poker stars Jennifer Leigh and Isaac Haxton, along with several World Series of Poker bracelet holders, and Poker Hall of Fame inductee Barry Greenstein.

After the Nations Cup, there will be a tournamnet called the Table, which will feature 135 of the best poker players in the world battling it out for a share of a $500,000 prize pool.  The winner of the tournament will take away $250,000.

The tournament will be recorded, and the highlights will be broadcast worldwide.

This year, the event is invitation only.  There are plans for The Table to become an open event next year, so you have a year to practice if you’re interested in giving it a shot!

Alongside the poker parts of the event, there are plans for exhibition games of Chess, bridge, drafts, and other “mind sports”.
