Giannetti and Oboodi Win on WPT
Season ten of the World Poker tour is now well underway, and two new players have earned the right to call themselves Champions. Matt Giannetti and Bobby Oboodi have taken bracelets at WPT tournaments this week.
The $3,500 buy-in WPT event at the Borgata has proven to be one of the highlights of this year’s tour. It attracted a record of 1,313 entries – more than 250 above the previous year, thanks to a reduced buy-in and an improved re-entry format. Oboodi secured his prize of $922,441 after defeating Jin Hwang in heads-up play. This win is the biggest of Oboodi’s career.
Over in Malta, the World Poker Tour’s debut went well. The WPT Malta attracted 240 entrants, including some big-names such as Phil Hellmuth and Tony Guoga. All eyes, however, were on Giannetti, who is in the november-nine and would be glad of the confidence boost if he did well.
Giannetti did walk away with the top prize of $273, 200 – but he was not pleased with his performance. He faced a difficult final table, and struggled to remain focused in the final three. However, he put forward a good comeback and beat Pecaglini in heads-up play. He said of his performance that “It wasn’t right, some of the beats that I put on people, but I mean, a few of the hands played themselves.”
