ESPN have noticed reduced interest in their coverage of the World Series of poker.

The first phase of the tournament aired six weeks ago, and the viewing statistics indicate that fewer people watched the tournament this year compared to last year’s figures.  The show scored an index of 0.67,  meaning roughly 737,000 thousand people tuned in – compared to an index of 0.79 last year.

There was an overall fall in viewers of 16%.  The only demographic which saw an increase in viewers was men over the age of 55.  The increase for that demographic was 8.1%, all other demographics saw a marked decline.

The first episode aired on July 20th.  After this episode there was a two hour long special covering the Poker Player’s Championship.  That episode was the only one to see an increase in viewing figures compared to 2009.

The coverage will continue for the next several weeks, leading up until the conclusion of the Main Event, which will see the final nine sit down in November to determin the winner.
