English poker player James Dempsey has won the World Poker Tour’s Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic. He took the title on Sunday at the prestigious $10,00 buy-in tournament at the Bellagio casino. Dempsey earned $821,612, by defeating a field of 413 players in the no-limit hold’em tournament. The total prize pool for the tournament was $4 million.
Dempsey, of Brighton, England, is a 29 year-old professional poker player. He has been playing poker since 2003. This latest win has more than doubled his tournament poker earnings, taking them to a total of $1.6 million. He has enjoyed a lot of success at hold’em poker, and already holds a World Series of Poker bracelet.
Dempsey defeated some big-names in the tournament, including Antonio Esfandiara, and Vanessa Selbst, who had hoped to become the first woman to win a WPT open Main Event. Dempsey defeated Nguyen in heads-up play. Nguyen and Dempsey were roughly even in chips, and had a good back-and-forth battle before Dempsey managed to double up, and then scoop the win with a big straight on the last card of the river.
