The Australian Poker League

The Australian Poker League is a great group for people that are interested in live games.  It has branches in several different states, and each branch holds regular games and meetings, as well as putting together groups for tournaments.

Attending an Australian poker League meeting is free.  You don’t have to pay to play.  The league can do this because they get their costs covered by the venues that hire them.  After all, the league is providing a service to the venue by attracting people who otherwise may not have turned up to the pub / social club that day. The games played by the league at most meetings are just for fun, letting people try the game, or practice their skills, without risking any money.

That doesn’t mean that the Australian Poker League is against cash play – they have some members that are very successful tournament players.  However, when it comes to social meetings they like to make poker as accessible as possible.

If you live in an area covered by the Australian Poker League, then it’s worth paying a visit to one of their meetings.  If you don’t, then look out for other, smaller local leagues.  Do keep in mind the way the APL operates, though.  If a league charges a large membership fee, or tries to push you to play for cash all the time, you should consider their motives carefully.  There are plenty of clubs and leagues that will let you enjoy the social aspects of poker without you needing to spend a fortune.
