HeadsUp Entertainment is currently negotiating with one of the world’s largest poker companies to either co-brand the Canadian Poker Tour or arrange an outright purchase of the poker tournament.

The deal will require due diligence on both parts, and there are numerous conditions that must be fulfilled, but if it happens, it will be big news. The Canadian market is believed to be the second largest poker markets in the world, and HeadsUp Entertainment have cornered a massive slice of that market, as the onwers of the Canadian Poker Tour, Canadian Poker Player Magazine, and the Canadian Poker Player Television Network.

Kelly Kellner, HeadsUp Entertainment’s CEO, said “Over the next 12 months we will manage more than 550 casino-based events in Canada, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and our Poker Super Cruise, which will attract some of the best poker players in North America. As a result of our relationships with the casinos, some of them exclusive, the online poker company wishes to go unnamed at this time. As the online poker market becomes more competitive, our brand name and ourmarket become more and more valuable. As a result of these negotiations, the numbers here can get very large, very quickly.”

We will keep you updated as more news of the deal unfolds.

Step Your way to a WSOP Main Event Seat

I am constantly talking about satellite poker tournaments because they just make sense. Why pay the full buy-in when you don’t have too? Unless you are flush with money a $10k buy-in is a lot of money. However, when you play well and understand how to put yourself in the best situation possible satellites become even more appealing for large no limit tournaments. The reason is that the buy-in for satellite multi-table tournaments and single table tournaments are usually ten percent of the actual buy-in. That is a huge savings for those that want to maximize their opportunities for a seat.Lately, poker rooms have been running a great deal of step tournaments as one of the many paths to a Main Event seat. Step tournaments are exactly what they sound like. Step tournaments allow you to start at varying levels , depending on how much and where on the ladder you want to buy-in at, and progress up to the final event for the seat. Usually the seat is awarded to the top two players and the other position get to replay the level or drop down a level or two depending on how well you finish. For a good satellite poker player this is an excellent opportunity to win a seat.

So don’t disregard the steps tournaments as a viable avenue to a large buy-in poker tournament, especially the WSOP Main Event.

It’s that time of year again! Yes, the World Series of Poker qualifiers are starting. This year, there are so many ways to qualify for the tournament that there’s no excuse for not trying. Whatever your budget or schedule, you have a chance to earn your way into the Main Event of the World Series of Poker 2010.

One site offering Qualifiers is Absolute Poker, who are running a range of tournaments for all budgets.

Steps lets you play through a series of tournaments for just a dime. If you finish first or second in a STEP you can progress to the next one. Do that in ten steps, and you’ve got yourself a Main Event seat. If you don’t win, but place well, you can re-play the STEP for free, giving yourself another chance to get yourself a place.

If buy-ins are your style there are super satellites running every week with a buy-in of $500 + $30.

The site is also running daily qualifiers for a price of $10.

Regular players on the site can take advantage of VIP qualifiers.

Keep checking back for details of World Series of Poker Satellites on other poker sites. This year, there’ll be plenty of ways to get yourself a place! Good luck!

The final table of the Bay 101 Shooting Star tournament is upon us. Day 3 saw Phil Hellmuth lead the table for most of the day, although he was eventually overtaken by Andy Seth, and finished the day in second place in the chip count.

Play lasted for all of Thursday and continued until well into the early hours of friday. Seth won 16 out of the 44 hands played on the TV-table bubble, including an important hand where Seth knocked out Lon Diamond in seventh place. Seth actually knocked out Scotty Nguyen in eigth place, and Brian Rast in ninth, and collected three Shooting Star bounties in the event too. The last remaining shooting star is Hellmuth, and Seth has his sights set firmly on Hellmuth for the final day.

Seth said “I’m going to keep trying to do what I’ve been doing. Stay in control of the table, play pots when I can, and play good, solid poker. I just hope to run well.”

Hellmuth says that he’s had a read on seth for the past two days, and that “If I can have a read on hom tomorrow, I’ll have a chance to win.” So far, Hellmuth has never been in the winner’s circle at a World Poker Tour tournament. Hellmuth says that “It would mean a lot. I really want to win. That’s what I do. I’ve been working really hard at my game.”

Stay tuned for updates on the tournament as it goes on.

Players can earn up to $7,500 in cash, and the prizes include a World Series of Poker Main Event package.

A spokesman for the site said “The Gladiator is off to a mightily powerfor start and we forecast over $1 million in prizes based on the first week’s activity. It still isn’t too late to get involvd though, there is still plenty of time to win some great cash rewards. If a customer earns 2000 points a day for the remaining 20 days of the promotion, they will pick up a cool $5,000.”

Between now and the first of April, players who hit the daily minimum target of ten PartyPoints for five days can claim an entry into a $10,000 freeroll. The more days that you earn points, the bigger the prize will be, with up to $7,500 cash to be won.

This is not the first time the site has ran The Gladiator. In the last run of the event, players secured 96 Aussie Millions player packages.

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the $331,000 raid on the EPT Berlin Poker Tournament.

The robbery, which took place on Day 4 of the tournament at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in central Berlin, disrupted play as theives armed with machetes and handguns gatecrashed the tournament and grabbed some of the prize money.

A brave security guard tackeld one of the thieves and prevented them from taking more of the money. The thieves made off with 242,000 euros in cash, driving away in a black Mercedes.

The Berliner Morgenpost is reporting that an arrest was made after police recieved information about the getaway car. The suspect was arrested last Friday, and is believed to have been involved in another casino raid which took place in Berlin in 2004.

The EPT Berlin is a prestigious tournament, tennis star Boris Becker had been involved in the tournament, which attracted 950 entrants, although he was eliminated the day before the robbery took place. The tournament offered a 4.7 million euro prize fun, with a prize of one million Euros for the winner of the tournament.

Keep checking back for more information about the robbery, and any arrests and convictions that take place in relation to the robbery, as we get it.

Calling with Small Pairs can Double Your Stack

If you play the game like a winner then you don’t always instantly fold your hand. By not instantly folding I am referring to those small and middle pairs when there are over cards on the board. True, if someone bets out strong you are going to want to get out of the way. However, for those that like to minimum bet their way through a hand, particularly with big pairs, this is prime time to pick them off.

Why?

Because they won’t fold their [K][K] or [A][A] when you bet back at them after hitting your set. The idea of staying in the pot when the price is cheap is simple, you want to hit your card on the Turn. If you do then that set is very likely to be the best hand and it may even lead to a double up against a big premium hand. In most situations I prefer to call when I am in position and there is a normal sized or small raise. I realize that I am going to miss the flop 72 percent and most of the time that I do hit my set I am going to win the pot. Again, the idea is to give yourself more than one chance to win the pot.

If you miss the Turn and there is another small bet with no scare cards on the board take another shot at it. You are priced in anyway and it just makes sense. You would be surprised how many times you either have the best hand or hit your card.

Strengthen your Small Pot Play

Small pots are where you separate the really good players from the average player. Many times weaker players will ram and jam when they have big pairs and either make a lot of money on the hand or go broke. Small pot players have a much better profit in cash games and tournaments over the long run. They do better because it is much more difficult to put them on hands and they understand the idea of pot control. In other words they win what they are supposed to and only lose what they are supposed to and no more.In order to strengthen your small pot play you can sit down at single table tournament and minimum bet the entire tournament. I am not suggesting you do this as your normal poker strategy but it will force you to read your opponents hand and make decisions based entirely on those reads. You will raise and fold accordingly. You can still raise the normal amount pre-flop but every street thereafter try minimum betting instead of betting out as you normally would. Just remember that it is an exercise used to strengthen your small pot play and not a legitimate poker strategy.

Stay Away from Netgative Players

I know I am constantly harping on keeping a positive mental attitude about your game. I harp on it because it is a proven fact. If you do not believe you are going to do well at the poker table then you won’t. Most poker players understand this mindset. However, there is also another scenario that you need to be aware of so that you can avoid it. That is the poker player that never seems to catch a break. The cards are always personally lined up against them and things never seem to go their way. These are the kinds of negative players you want to stay way from. You want to stay away from them because that cloud of negativity can easily infiltrate and poison others if they are not protecting their mental real estate. You must continue to be around positive people no matter where your endeavors take you. It helps to be around people who, even though they may struggle from time to time, never believe that struggle will result in their demise.

Negative poker players can suck the life out of you and drain you of useful energy you need to be expending at the poker table instead of listening to their bad beat stories and how the so called bad players at the table always seem to hit their cards. You are better off hanging out with people working towards improving their game instead of whining about it. You can count on that.
