Police in Quebec have reported that they have recovered approximately half of the $115,000 that was stolen from Jonathan Duhamel just before Christmas last year.

Duhamel, who won almost nine million dollars at the 2010 World Series of poker, was robbed at his home last year, by thieves who posed as delivery men to get him to open his door. The robbers beat him and forced him to open the safe in his home.

The police received an anonymous tip that informed them that part of the cash had been stashed in a mailbox in Old Longueuil. The police rushed to the location, where they found half of the money, in the same denominations and currency as the cash that had been reported stolen.

Police have already identified four suspects, who will face trial soon for robbery, assault, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Among the suspects is Duhamel’s ex-girlfriedn, Bianca Rojas-Latraverse.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges, but has been denied bail along with two other suspects. A fourth suspect has been released for the duration of the trial. The initial hearing will take place on the 21st February.

Kevin Calenzo won the grand prize, and took away $197,451 in cash, along with the wsop Circuit gold ring, and a seat at the WSOP Circuit national championship.

Calenzo put in an impressive performance to take the prize. He was in 10th place when the tournament was reduced to the final 15, but managed to improve his position to earn a place at the final table.

He had a strong lead when he entered heads-up play against Ian Mack. Mack and Calenzo traded chips for a short while, with Calenzo ending up at a three-to-one chip deficit at one point in the session. However, he managed to keep his cool, and claw his way back up to a strong position, before finishing Calenzo off when his top-pair bested Mack’s flush draw. Mack went home with $122,183 for his second place performance.

Oliver Speidel is the official winner of the 2011 Aussie Millions poker Championship. This prestigious tournament ranks highly in poker gaming circles and it saw some 20 official events taking place during the course of the 2011 tournament. Every January at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia this top-tier tournament kicks off. The AUD$10,600 NL Hold’em Main Event was the crowning glory of the tournament. It is only fitting that Melbourne’s son – Oliver Speidel – won the contest. And with the win came a Rolex watch and a diamond-studded ring.

Some 659 players peppered the gaming arena for the 2011 Aussie Millions. And towards the end, there were just 7 players left at the final table. Oliver Speidel dominated the contest and the last day’s play. Along the way he ousted Yann Dion, Bjorn Li and Patrick Healy. A series of methodical plays sent Speidel into overdrive. He took down the competition in Mohamad Kowssarie, Mile Krtanoski and even Kenneth Wong. The latter player drew a 9 (clubs) and a 9 (hearts). Surprisingly, Speidel wrought havoc with his double Ace – Ace (clubs) and Ace of (spades). The rest as they say is history.

Dorey, of London, England, defeated a field of 125 players to take away the tournament’s big prize. The APT Europe event had a prize pool of £62,500, and Dorey walked away with £17,130 for his efforts – along with the pride of being in the record books as the winner of the first ever APT Europe stop.

Dorey has enjoyed a lot of success over the last few months, so watch out for him on the international poker scene.

Karoullas, also from England, took away 13,600 for his efforts, which is still more than enough to ring in the new year (and the Chinese new year) quite nicely. He should be another one to watch over the coming months.

Day 1a of the wsop Circuit Caesars Palace Main Event has concluded. The day was the first of two Day 1s, and it saw a strong turnout – with 308 players buying-in to to the $1,600 event. The day saw 15 levels of play, and only 58 players survived. The chip leader is Joe Kuether, who has 380,500 in chips. Close behind him is Jonas Mackoff, who holds 355,000.

Kuether earned his lead after besting Giorgio Medici in a massive pot. Kuether went all-in pre flop with two nines, versus the Ace of Clubs and Nine of Clubs of Medici. The board failed to help either player, so Kuether’s pair won him the hand, and left Medici crippled. Medici went to the rail a short time later.

Other noteable Day 1a eliminations included Sam Barnhart, Tom Marchese, Ted Lawson, Joe Tehan, Steve Gross, and David Baker.

Day 1B will also be held this weekend, and there will be another field of hopefuls playing through 15 levels. Keep checking back for updates on the tournament as play continues.

Other noteable European Poker Award winners included Andrey Pateychuck, who won the Rookie of the Year award, Jesse May took the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Bertrand Grospellier won the Personality of the Year award. In addition, Pius Heinz took the award for Best Tournament Performance.

Trickett is now firmly in the record books as one of the best players in the world. His fellow countrymen, James Akenhead and Toby Lewis, have gotten off to a good start in 2012, so we may see more Brits joining him at awards ceremonies in the near future.

The Independent MP Andrew Wilkie has spoken out to say that Julia Gillard would be breaching a pact with the Australian community, as well as the pact with Wilkie himself, if she decides not to go ahead with the reforms to poker machine gambling. Wilkie, who made an agreement to support the government if the reforms are made law by early May this year, made the ultimatum just before going to meet with Ms Gillard on Tuesday evening.

Mr Wilkie has also been in talks with cross-benchers in Adelaid, Perth, and Sydney, and had a telephone meeting with Tony Abbott, leader of the Opposition, as part of his campaign to shore up numbers of support for laws to assist those who are struggling with problem gambling.

The poker machine reforms are a controversial issue, with the Australian community as a whole divided as to whether the changes, which would involve pre-commitment cards being used in clubs across the country, would help those who need it the most, or whether they would cause financial issues for the venues that provide the machines.

A US citizen implicated in a movement to help online poker companies move billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds to offshore accounts has pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges.

Ira Rubin, aged 53, made the guilty plea at the US district court in Manhattan. According to prosecutors, he made it appear that the money processed by poker companies through American banks was actually proceeds from transactions on US based online golf stores, electronics companies, and other legitimate businesses. Ira Rubin admitted that he had created dozens of different websites that could be used to disguise the payments. He said that he had engaged in the fraudulent activities from 2006 until early 2011, when the sites were shut down as part of the Black Friday raids.

He was facing charges that could have amounted to as much as 80 years in jail, but his plea came with a bargain that reduced the sentence he will receive to 18 months or two years in prison.
