European Poker Tour Berlin Day 4 Run Down

Day 4 of the European Poker Tour Berlin 5,000 Euro No Limit Hold’em Main Event was more exciting than the average poker tournament.  Six armed robbers stormed the tournament room.  The live video feed showed the first few seconds of the commotion, but was quickly turned off, and remained off for the rest of the day.

Nobody was seriously injured in the robbery, but the incident did delay the tournament for serveral hours - play did not resume until 6PM.  The live video feed is expected to be turned back on for the final table of the tournament.

When play resumed, the field had been narrowed down to 20 players.  By the end of the day, only eight players remained. Everyone who went home today took home at least 23,500 Euros for their efforts,  abd the final eight are guaranteed to be going home with at least 72,000 Euros.

The chip leader at the end of Day 4 was Kevin MacPhee, who stands head and shoulders above the rest of the pack with 6,070,000 chips.  His closest competitor is Ketul Nathwani, with 4,685,000 chips.  Rounding out the table are Marc Inizan (3,655,000), Marcel Koller (3,590,000), Artur Wasek (3,530,000), Marko Neumann (2,185,000) and Nico Behling (960,000).

The tournament winner will take home 1,000,000 Euros.  Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament progresses.

Ashton Griffin Wins North American Poker Tour

The 2010 PokerStars North American Poker Tour Venetian concluded last week, and after almost 12 hours of play on the final day it was young poker pro Ashton Griffin that took home the title.

The final even was the $25,000 High-roller Bounty Shootout, an interesting event which saw seven tables of seven players sit down on Tuesday, and those who won their table moved on to the final table, each starting final table play with 150,000 chips, no matter how strong or weak their position had been on their original table.

The tournament structure meant that players earned $5,000 for each player they eliminated, plus $75,000 for winning their first table.  The top “bounty hunter” would also win an extra $100,000.  Scott Seiver, who had eliminated all six of his starting table opponents, was a favourite for that prize.

The final table consisted of Ashton Griffin, Scott Seiver, Peter Eastgate, Brett Richey, Faraz Jaka, Joe Cassidy, and Hoyt Corkins.

Seiver started strong, eliminating Peter Eastgte.  Next out was Brett Richey, who was eliminated by Griffin.  Seiver continued his strong form by sending home Faraz Jaka, reinforcing his lead as the top bouny hunter.

Seiver’s luck did not hold out, however, as Corkins sent him home in forth place.  The remaining three duked it out for three hours before something gave and Cassidy went home at the hands of Griffin.  Seiver may not have won the tournament, but Griffin’s elimination secured Seiver’s top bounty hunter position.

Heads up play between Corkins and Griffin didn’t last long - just two hnds, before Griffin’s nine and eight of diamonds, paired with a nine of spades on the flop bested Corkins’ nine and three of hearts.  The turn and the river didn’t improve te hand, so Corkins was eliminated.

The final prize money run-down was:

Ashton Griffin - $560,000
Hoyt Corkins - $100,000
Joe Cassidy - $95,000
Scott Seiver $215,000
Faraz Jaka - $95,000
Brett Richey - $90,000
Peter Eastgate - $85,000

Seiver may have went home in fourth, but the top bounty hunter prize certainly made it a good week’s work for him.

New Coverage for World Series of Poker

July 20, 2009 by lesley

The TV Coverage of this year’s World Series of Poker will include several major changes compared to previous years.  ESPN have decided that instead of filming the H.O.R.S.E event, which is a prestigious, big-money tournament that covers five poker disciplines, they will air coverage of three smaller events instead.

The H.O.R.S.E event has proven popular among hardcore poker fans, but the network decided that it did not translate to TV screens very well, and ratings have suffered.

ESPN will instead airing coverage of three events from this year’s WSOP: the 40th anniversary $40,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em event, the Ante Up for Africa event and, of course, the Main Event.

Additionaly, the WSOP organizers have added another day to the calendar before the final table, citing the reason that the Main Event should be a test of skill rather than a test of endurance.  The added day has posed a problem for ESPN, as the pace of eliminations appears to be quicker than in previous years.  Rather than giving ESPN three hours of television out of each 10-12 hour day, the are finding it hard to find stories to tell from the shorter amount of footage.  This has, however, meant that poker fans get more of what they really wan - nitty gritty hands instead of all-in confrontations.

Australian Wins Poker Ashes

Shane Warne may not be instilling terror in English batters this year, but he is still creating an imposing presence - albeit on the poker table instead of the cricket field.  Warne led an Australian line up of poker players to victory over England’s team (led by Darren Gough) in the 888.com Poker Ashes.

The australian poker players, Shane Warne, Jeff Thomson, Damien Martyn, and Dean Jones bested Gladstone Small, Dimi Mascharenas, Rob Key, and Matthwe Hoggard - 4-1 in the 888.com Poker Ashes.

The series was already decided by the fourth match, but Warne and Gough decided to spice it up and placed a side bet on the final round.  The losing captain would wear their opponent’s shirt at Lord’s for the Test Match.  Warne led his team to victory, so avoided having to wear the three lions, leaving Yorkshireman Darren Gough to wear the Australian green and gold.

Can Phil Ivey win the 2009 Main Event Championship?

July 20, 2009 by Curtom

Poker players around the world are all asking the same question. Can Phil Ivey win the 2009 No Limit Main Event Championship? Well that is certainly a viable question and one that will be answered a few months from now in November. After eight grueling days of playing non-stop poker for twelve hours a day we are now down to the final nine players. By now most of you know who Phil Ivey is but for those who don’t let me give you a brief summary of his poker career.

Phil Ivey was born in New Jersey and learned to play cards at an early age. Once he put together a small bankroll he would head off to Foxwoods to play seven-card stud and no limit hold’em and hone his skills. Ivey held a job as necessary but new early on that he was going to be a professional gambler and put his energy into becoming the best there is. Like everyone else he had his ups and downs and went broke many times before learning proper bankroll management to go along with his growing skill playing poker.

Ivey broke onto the national scene in 2000 winning a couple of titles in the US Poker Open and Jack Binion Open. In the 2002 World Series of Poker Ivey won three bracelets announcing to the poker world that he was here to stay. Since then Ivey has been a mainstay on the poker scene with several tournament wins which include the 2009 World Poker Tour LA Poker Classic for a cool $1.5 million dollars. Ivey is just as deadly in online and live cash games raking in millions of dollars against top poker pros over the years.

One would think that he would have a considerable edge over the rest of the table. However, that is not necessarily the case because Ivey is short stacked at this final table with only $10 million in chips and will need to double up relatively quickly. My feeling is that Ivey will either double up early and make a run or be out of the tournament. Why? Well, because I have never known Phil Ivey to play for anything less than First Place.

It certainly will not be easy as the chip leader is sitting on a stack of $59 million with the next largest stack at $34 million. However, if Ivey can double up I expect that it will be a very entertaining final table and we just may see him take down the Main Event and add yet the most significant bracelet of his two already from this years WSOP.

I am looking forward to it and you should be too.

German Christian Heich Wins Aussie Millions Event 1

January 13, 2009 by ozpoker

Germany’s Christian Heich has overcome a record field for an Aussie Millions preliminary event to capture the first title of the 2009 Aussie Millions series and the first coveted Aussie Millions Gold Ring.

Out of a record 731 entrants only 110 players returned to Crown Casino in Melbourne for Day 2 of the 2009 Aussie Millions Event 1, the $1,100 No Limit Hold’em.

Notable exits early on Day 2 were Eric Assadourian, David Saab and Jamie Pickering all busted in the early going.

Aussie favourite Mel Judah busted in 42nd after a key hand when Clint Jordanou caught his three-outerjack J♣ on the river to bust Judah’s A♣Q♥ with his A♥J♠. That hand crippled Judah and he went to the rail shortly after for a $3,290 collect.

With the play down to just three tables local aussie poker player and Crown Poker regular, Steve Topakas moved all in pre-flop for his last 76,000 with A♣Q♦ and was in great shape as David Griffiths made the call with A♦9♣ . When the board fell 7♣Q♣6♦A♥T♦, Topakas had cuaght his two pair to double up to over 150,000, with Griffiths falling back to around 200,000.

Topakas was to chip up again later when short-stacked Dhiya Majeed opened the pot from the button with an all-in raise and Thomas Lindbjerg in the small blind came all-in over the top. Topakas showed no hesitation calling both from the big blind.

Majeed showed A♥7♠ dominating Lindbjerg’s A♠3♥, while Topkas turned the cowboys K♣K♠ to be a huge pre-flop favourite. Depite sweating a gutshot draw for Majeed’s A♥7♠ on a T♣J♠8♣ board. Topakas eliminated both players when the turn and river ran J♥Q♦.

Topakas took a hit when with just 13 players left he pushed all in on a J♥A♦4♠ flop with after a big raise pre-flop and was insta-called by David Griffiths with A♣J♣. Griffiths hand held up and moved to 520,000 chips with Topakas back to 170,000.

As play slowed and tightened up and with just ten players left the Tournament Director, mindful of the time constraints of the Aussie Millions Schedule; elected to declare a single final table laboriously play hand for hand at two five-handed tables until the 10th elimination.

The final table boiled down to strong representation from Melbourne Crown regulars, one Sydney master and a young kid from Germany.

Aussie Millions Event 1 $1,100 NL Holdem Final Table

  • Seat 1: Scott Peters Geelong (134,000)
  • Seat 2: Christian Heich Germany (596,000)
  • Seat 3: Steve Topakas Melbourne (446,000)
  • Seat 4: Dean Blatt Melbourne (113,000)
  • Seat 5: Sam Khouiss Sydney (176,000)
  • Seat 6: Clint Jordanou Narre Warren (204,000)
  • Seat 7: David Griffiths Melbourne (674,000)
  • Seat 8: Steve Bouya Melbourne (750,000)
  • Seat 9: Ismail Ismail Melbourne (80,000)
  • Seat 10: Paul Rochford Melbourne (490,000)
  • Despite being short-stacked as play proceeded, the most dangerous player at the table was without doubt the veteran Aussie poker player, Sam Khouiss who boasts a tournament history that includes cashes at both the 2006 and 2007 WSOP Main Events, an australian poker Champioship win in 1999 and again in 2004, and a win in the 2006 Aussie Millions $ 1,000 No Limit Hold’em Event 8; plus numerous other final tables for winnings in excess of $500,000.

That said the other Melbounre regulars in the table were all regular final table contenders at the major Crown Poker tournaments, with the most experinced easily being Steve Topakas who has several regualr Crown Poker tournament wins under his belt and a Joe Hachem Deepstack $180 NL Holdem tournament win and a 2007 Pokernews Cup $100 Seven Card Stud win to his credit.

Heich, the sole international player at the table had only one other notable live poker tournament success to his credit with a 13th at the 2008 Austrian Classics €80 NL Holdem Event in Vienna. Heich had been quiet in the run up to the final table, avoiding big pots and slowly accumulating chips.

But at the final table he chaged gears and with some solid play and good cards sent Peters, Blatt and Griffith to the rail in 9th,8th and 7th respectively. Heichs run of luck didn’t hurt his cause either as he sent the dangerous Khouiss to the rail when his all in pre-flop A♦6♣ sucked out on a 8♥Q♣9♣6♥Q♦ board to beat Khouiss’ A♥7♦.

The very next hand Heich chipped up again, sending Rochford out in 4th when in another all-in preflop move Heich called Rochford’s T♦T♠ with his J♣J♦ and they held up.

One time final tabkle chip leader, Steve Bouya was sent out in 3rd in another all in pre-flop contest when Topakas’ K♣K♠ dominated Bouya’s K♥Q♣.

As play got down to heads up Topakas had a slight lead with 1,975,000 chips over Heich’s 1,6990,00 but Heich quickly assumed the lead with some aggressive heads up play and despite Topakas gaing back some ground he lost a key hand and then ended up all in preflop with Q♥T♦ against Heich’s JDJ♠. Heich’s good run of cards continued when the J♥ hit on the flop and outlasted Topakas’ double straight draw on a A♣3♥J♥8♠5♠ board to win him the first event of the 2009 Aussie Millions.

Heich had defeated the best Australia had to offer and collected the first place prize of AU$150,000.

Martin Rowe Books A Local APPT Sydney $1Million Win

Filed under APPT, Star City Poker

Local Sydney poker player Martin Rowe pocketed a massive AUD $1 million to become the newest PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Grand Final champion, outplaying 476 rivals over the past five days.

Rowe started out playing in pub tournaments just three years ago, but the 34-year-old financial analyst is now 2008 APPT Sydney Champion.

The tournament began on Tuesday with 477 players and by Sunday the final table of nine players had been decided with seven aussies in the running.

Rowe had been playing tournament poker for only three years when he entered a tournament at his local pub before quickly graduating to “real” poker tournaments at Star City and Melbourne’s Crown Casino.

The APPT win is his first major tournament, and featured an impressive starting field, including current WSOP Champion Peter Eastgate, homegrown WSOP Champion Joe Hachem, and former WSOP Champion Chris Moneymaker, as well as big tournament regular such as Vanessa Rousso and Gavin Griffen.

“Three years ago a pub near me started up a normal league, and I started playing in that because I was interested in the game, and how the odds came together,” he said.

“I started out hoping not to make a fool of myself, and rapidly improved.”

“I haven’t made any decisions about where I go from here. I won’t be making any decisions until after tomorrow.”

The final table play lasted a nine and a half hours and the last hand of the tournament went down this way :

    Rowe raised 250,000 pre-flop.
Gray went all-in and Martin called revealing A♣Q♥ to Gray’s 9♥5♥.
The flop came down A♠Q♣5♠ giving Rowe top two pair and Gray bottom pair. The turn completed Gray’s bottom two pair with a 9♠ and Gray needed the two remaining 5’s or 9’s to survive. The river brought the 3♠ and with no player holding a spade, Rowe took the pot and final with his two pair.

This tournament ends the second season of the PokerStars.net APPT. The Season 3 schedule for the APPT is due to be announced shortly.

The standings for the final nine of the APPT Sydney Main Event are as follows :

    • 1 Martin Rowe Australia $1,000,000
